I have to be honest, this is my favourite lesson in my shop. I have taught it numerous times and it has always been fun for pupils and staff!
This lesson allows pupils to help the Captain get as much treasure as possible to the ship by designing a boat which will hold lots of gold (or marbles to you and I).
Once you’ve explained the task, pupils draw designs for a new, weight bearing boat and explain how they’re going to test the boat to show the Captain (the teacher) how good their design is.
After that, they build their model out of plasticine, test their boats in water and record the results.
The winning team always gets treasure in the form of golden chocolate coins!
This is the second lesson of two which enables children to design and make their own packaging for a product. My classes designed packaging for their chocolate products but it is very easy to adapt these lessons for a different product. Needless to say, my classes really enjoyed making the packaging and got to recap nets for 3D shapes at the same time!
I've included links in the planning which take you to the paper resources to save you having to find them.

This lesson introduces pupils to using nets to create packages for food products. This pack includes the lesson plan and notebook slides. I have also included a link in the planning to the website where I found the paper resources to save you creating your own.
In the next lesson, we used the net templates to create boxes for our own brand of chocolate bar. This can be found under 'Food Packaging Lesson 2' in my shop. My classes really enjoyed these lessons and I'm sure yours will too!
